I was going through my camera settings today, I am a Nikon user, and looking at some of the settings. I am sure some of this is personal preference, but what do you keep your Picture Control set to? This setting is found under Shooting menu, set picture control?? Also, should I have it set to Adobe color space, I shoot jpeg yet :)?? I have been shooting in sRGB...Just some things I have been wondering about :) Thanks for any advice!
Have a great Sunday. Lots of snow is falling here. Estimated snowfall is anywhere from 12-18". Yippee Skippie ;)
ADDED @ 9:30 PM: So how do you ladies store all of your photos? :) Part of the reason for not switching yet is that I don't feel educated enough yet...if I have to be?? Also, they are so much larger and I take lots of photos, which I am sure you ladies do as well....so where to store?
As far as color space goes, I would recommend to keep it simple and stay with sRGB across the board. If you use Adobe RGB you need to make sure your print lab accepts Adobe RGB profile and you will still need to convert back to sRBG to post to web b/c an Adobe RBG file posted on the web will have washed out colors and greyish skin tones. Hope that helps!
ReplyDeleteAs far as Picture Control, I have mine set to standard. I know some people have their's set to Neutral. I would probably stick to one of those. Vivid can mess with skin tones, but can also be pretty cool at times too. And can I ask why you are shooting jpeg?
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with Chesney about the sRGB vs Adobe RGB thing. I'm lazy and just do sRGB to keep it simple.
sRGB is the way to go! Whatcha waiting for to go RAW?!
ReplyDeleteNO problem! I shoot in RAW so none of those other settings would make a difference, but by shooting in standard or neutral, my LCD will display a similar look to what I would see in ACR. Mine should probably be set to neutral. I think it is Audrey Woulard (I think it is her?? shoots Nikon, uses vivid mode and at very wide ap's of 1.6) that shoots jpeg and she has tweaked all of her in camera settings--contrast, sharpening, etc...to give her the look she most wants to achieve SOOC, then just does some minor things in PS. She says you need to totally nail exposure every time to shoot jpeg though. It looks like you are doing a good job with exposure. But check her out. I think she just did an interview on MCP Actions blog?
ReplyDeleteAnd once I switched to raw, I have never returned to jpeg. It is just so much easier to recover a screw up :)
I shoot Canon and have my picture mode set to Standard. I went to a Donna Bouchet clinic last year. She shoots Nikon and loves Vivid, and her portraits of her daughter are outstanding. I too shoot in jpeg and just haven't been brave enough to take the leap to RAW, but I know I need to. I use Carbonite which automatically backs everything up on my computer without me even asking it to do so. It gives me a lot of peace of mind.
ReplyDeleteBTW, thank you for your sweet comment on my post yesterday. It was a tough post to do, but somehow taking pictures, writing and sharing is helping me to deal with my loss and pain in some strange sort of way.
ReplyDeleteMy Canon has an mRAW option for a smaller sized RAW file. Which is what I'll use if I'm just taking pics of the kids. If it's for someone else (like my neighbor's kids), I'll use full RAW.
ReplyDeleteI shoot RAW all the way.
